Swoon at Galerie L.J. November 30th, 2013 - February 1st
Posted 1/3/14

Swoon is an undeniable force in the art scene, so Parisian residents will be glad to know that they'll be able to see some of her work up close and personal in her solo exhibition at Galerie LJ until February 1st, 2014. Galerie LJ is pleased to receive SWOON for her 3rd solo exhibition in Paris, "Motherlands." After spending the last 3 years to achieve monumental installations for museums (MoCA Los Angeles, ICA Boston, New Orleans NOMA, MAC Oaxaca, ...) and dedicating herself to non profit, commu... By Melody Mock for ABQ Arts The words “YOUR” and “HERE” sit above and below the image of an eye on a billboard in a silkscreened image by Shepard Fairey. “YOUR [eye] HERE”, it says, commanding you to pay attention. This image graces the cover of the guide to “STREET ARTS: A Celebration of Hip Hop Culture & Free Expression.” In October and November in Albuquerque, your eye and your ear will be drawn to a number of projects, happenings and discussions through this citywide collaboration org... By Adrian GomezJournal Staff Writer Chris Stain works quickly on his graffiti art. It's a quality that suits him well — at least now. "I first got caught when I was 11," says the New York City-based graffiti artist. "Since then, I've learned that I have to be quick with what I do." Stain is one of a handful of artists participating in 516 ARTS' "Street Arts: A Celebration of Hip-Hop Culture and Free Expression" exhibit. The show runs until Dec. 11, mainly at 516 ARTS in Downtown Albuquerque. "I jumpe... [more]

Chaz Bojorquez, a Juxtapoz cover artist in March 2009 and a penultimate legend of the Los Angeles graffiti game (we are talking Orson Welles level), made a video this past Fall with poet Idris Goodwin. Titled "New Mexico Remix," the piece was part of a three-month look at Hip-Hop culture and free speech showcased at a non-profit art space in Albuquerque, called 516 ARTS. See video here: http://www.juxtapoz.com/Current/chaz-borjorquez-and-idris-goodwinnew-mexico-remix The show itself was c... [more]

By Nancy Salem Street artists who paint, paste and sculpt on urban space haven't always received a warm welcome from the fine art world. Reactions to the art form in the past have ranged from a yawn to accusations of vandalism and threats of jail. But as a major project this fall in Albuquerque shows, today street art is increasingly popular with a broad audience, and with the art world too. "STREET ARTS: A Celebration of Hip Hop Culture & Free Expression" was organized by the downtown, nonp... [more]

I’m sitting at a Starbucks on the edge of Beverly Hills, across from Armani Exchange. Next to me two customers discuss their “nail situation” and their colorist–a blond expert–with a gravitas usually reserved for the War Room. After all it is Oscar party weekend. I couldn’t help comparing the magnitude of this battle with the one being fought less than five miles from here, in West Hollywood, where a defunct Big Lots houses “Manifest Equality,” promoting equal rights for gay, lesbian, bisexual, an... Swoon has easily created the most ambitious and collaborative art exhibition of 2008, with a paradigm shifting installation at Deitch's Long Island City space on the East River.  A 30 year old woman and world famous graffiti artist, Swoon's Swimming Cities of Switchback Sea includes a yearlong project of building seven sailing boats, a floating steampunk artworld collaboration with alternative designers, carpenters, engineers, and sailing aficionados. Dozens of young creative free spirits inhab... [more]

You may remember when the Gap on Haight and Ashbury closed and for a few weeks a giant yellow "Amaze" graffiti throw-up graced the windows of the building--now that storefront hosts the RVCA clothing store with the VASF gallery in their back room. The current exhibition at the VASF is curated by Marsea Goldberg of New Image Art in Los Angeles, and brings together a wide variety of New Image artists from LA, New York and San Francisco. The thread of curation is difficult to find in this exhibit, pu... [more]

For a few weeks artists Monica Canilao from Oakland and Swoon from New York lived inside the Luggage Store Gallery, camping out in a tent in the corner, breathing fumes from glue and musty boards, and assisted by dozens of volunteers and friends, and erected the fantastically ambitious collaborative installation, Feral. Inspired by a book on feral children they read to each other during the install of their exhibit with David Ellis at the Black Rat Press Gallery in Shoreditch, London, in Oc... [more]
