“While sleeping, watch!” -alchemical motto

I’ve been working on a series of small pen and ink drawings titled “The Orinou Lobuon Singularity and the Speculative Visualization of Infinite Amalgamation.” This series attempts to explore the idea that, out of complexity emerges greater complexity. The coalescent bodies in the drawings emerge from each other. They are like delicate bubbles floating on the surface of water, or a kernel of popcorn frozen mid-pop. As temporary aggregates of genetic material, each of us emerged out of, and will eventually return to, a singularity...forming our own unique wormhole through space. I imagine it like a supernova that’s been caught in an infinite loop of exploading and imploading. While I work I think of this quote from Terence McKenna quite often: “Embedded in your own sense of identity and purpose is a microscopic reflection of the larger purpose that is built into the universe.”

Brian O’Dell received his BFA and MFA in Fine Art from California Institute of the Arts. He lives and works in Los Angeles, CA.
