Structure in Painting

Last night I dreamed about structure in painting. I’ve been thinking that my own work is better if I have a hook to hang it on, meaning that in order for me to not feel completely lost in the chaos of the world; I need something that keeps me connected to the physical. In the flesh refers to the fact that I’ve recently brought over several contemporary landscape paintings to the SFMOMA’s Artist’s Gallery at Fort Mason, Building A, in San Francisco, right next door to the the renowned “Greens” restaurant. In the middle of the night when eating a bowl of cold cereal with non-fat milk doesn’t do the trick, and when reading some more of “True Life,” twenty-five years of conversations with David Hockney still doesn’t do the trick, then maybe it’s time to get out of bed and start to record some of what’s been going through your mind instead of tossing and turning and looking at the clock.
