Shared Intelligence will be the first major museum exhibition to survey the fraught but highly productive relationship of painting to photography in 20th-Century American Art. It brings together approximately 75 photographs and paintings by such artists as Robert Bechtle, Chuck Close, Thomas Eakins, Sherrie Levine, Georgia O’Keeffe, Cindy Sherman, Charles Sheeler, Ben Shahn, Edward Steichen, and Alfred Stieglitz for whom the two mediums were essential to their practices. In opposition to Modernis... I saw David Wojnarowicz’s Fire in My Belly, 1987, the day before it was pulled from the exhibition "Hide/Seek" at the National Portrait Gallery in Washington, D.C. The exhibit itself has been touted by the gallery as “The first major museum exhibition to focus on sexual difference in the making of American portraiture.” Because of pressure from the Catholic League, and complaints from Virginia Rep. Eric Cantor (amongst others who haven’t actually seen the exhibition), the show... [more]

Embroiled in controversy—it's what you’d expect from an exhibition about gay portraiture at the National Portrait Gallery in Washington D.C.  In fact, it’s rather surprising that the controversy didn’t arise until a month after the show was open—just in time for World AIDS Day.  On November 30th, the Catholic League complained about David Wojnarowicz's 1987 video piece Fire in My Belly, a “vile video” that could be interpreted as nothing more than an attack on Christianity, all because o... I am fascinated by Walt Whitman’s thought that Eakins was “not a painter, but a force.” Eakins didn’t strike me, in LACMA’s Manly Pursuits: The Sporting Images of Thomas Eakins, as much of a force, but more a careful, diligent student of life, tempted by the forceful, the muscular, and the dramatic, hardly eager to let the stormy extent of those things play their way into melodrama or spectacle. He lived at a time when the robust inheritance of America was starting to stretch its legs with its... [more]
