Born - Belfast, Northern Ireland, 1968
I grew up in the small town of Holywood, by the banks of the Lough, on the outskirts of the city of Belfast. Quite apart from the dubious joys of a childhood in Northern Ireland, I had the good fortune to spend a few years of my life traveling around the world drawing pictures on city streets, living on the proceeds dropped into a hat by passers by. There were many precious moments along the way, some joyous, some wretched, and the experience gave me a peculiar perspective on life. Since then I've taken journeys to some more remote places, with a particular interest in the lifestyle, traditions, and stories, of peoples who live in symbiosis with their environment. Some of the people and places i've visited are the 'Maasai' in Northern Tanzania, the 'Hack Winik' in the Lacandon jungle, Chiapas, Mexico, Aboriginal people in central Australia, and people of the Aran Islands off the west coast of Ireland. My paintings and journals tell stories of the people and places. As the work has become more abstract, influenced by an interest in architecture, theoretical physics, and the work of some Irish writers, the journeys still remain a source of inspiration and reference.
