Cars have been a fascination for artists since they sputtered onto the road. They are cultural objects, gleaming social markers, symbolic vessels of all that is modernity. Usually, there are one or two “art cars” in Miami, but in all the years I’ve made the rounds the most memorable was easily Pimp Juice, the fully customized Cadillac low-rider Jeffrey Deitch parked in front of Art Basel back in 2007. It was tricked out by the Chicago-based Puerto-Rican artist Dzine and it was... [more]

In the current presentation of works from the collection, S.M.A.K. has assembled a selection of paintings; not only on the traditional canvas, but also on more unusual supports. These works may offer a moment of calm after the stream of flashing media images and film excerpts in the adjacent exhibition by Johan Grimonprez. This collection presentation is composed like a visual chain, starting with pure colour and moving through abstract paintings to more narrative, figurative works. It closes with... [more]

For FischGrätenMelkStand – the final project at Temporäre Kunsthalle Berlin – the artist John Bock has developed a masterful meta-structure within which he installs works by 63 artists. An eleven-meter-tall walk-in steel construction creates a range of spatial situations over four levels, linking the individual works into a kind of Gesamtkunstwerk, or total artwork. Unlike the classic white cube, this scenario offers the works on show anything but a neutral setting. Within a structure t... [more]

A figure of international stature whose work includes sculpture, installation, and design, Franz West appears in his most comprehensive form to date in this retrospective exhibition, with objects ranging from early interactive works from the 1970s to large installations comprised of bright aluminum and epoxy objects that dramatize their surroundings with bold colors and oversize scale. For the past three decades, West has played a critical role in contributing to developments in post-1965 art, re... [more]

The current show at Sutton Lane Gallery, curated by art historian David Lewis, is a sampling of works by seven artists along the theme of an intellectual puzzle. Each work was chosen to be part of a search for truth, in the sophisticated language that is art. The installation at Sutton Lane Gallery is informed by a specific knowledge of the book La Vie mode d’emploi, by Perec, and therefore the show verges on being intellectually exclusive. However, prompted by the press release, th... [more]

The current exhibition of catalogues entitled Fama and Fortune Bulletin at 2nd Cannons is sexy. Partially because of the design: brown, recycled paper, soft covers with uniformed layout and matte pages. Somewhat because of their presentation: aligned on four white shelves with warm spotlights.  But mostly because of their content: every issue one or two artists are invited to design, write and format the contents of the publication. Albert Oehlen, Franz West, Martin Kippenberger, Frances Stark an... [more]
