On a beautiful, sunny, typically Greek day in early May, I walked up the steps to the Gennadius Library of The American School of Classical Studies, in the heart of Athens, looking forward to seeing a newly opened exhibition titled A Thousand Doors. The collection of the Daimler Corporation focuses on “abstract and geometrical pictorial concepts, from which it derives its distinctive character,” which is an excellent starting point for conceptual approaches to art marking.       Ceal Floyer's works are charming. The British artist uses wit and a sweet sensibility to lure viewers towards larger questions about the reception, presentation and purpose of conceptual art. Floyer's appropriations and mixed media installations (using stationary paper, rubber bands, puzzles, a receipt for only all-white foods and lights) offer the pleasures of a good puzzle. The theme of the Walker Art Center’s exhibition “The Quick and the Dead” got personal, quickly, when I observed that an On Kawara date painting near the entry was the same date as an uncle’s birthday. Curator Daniel Birnbaum chose a clever theme in this year’s curated biennale exhibition. It has almost endless scope and he did a fairly good job of making sure that the artists fit the topic – even if that did sometimes mean equating “making installations” with “making worlds”.
