Negrense artists take pride in expressing in various art forms people, places and things native to their home province, Negros Occidental. Principally the country's top sugar supplier and exporter, the sacada or the sugarcane plantation worker has become the typical Negrense art icon.
Taking a fresh turn, and considering that the province is also home to the famous feathered gamefowls which attract bigtime cockfighters from all over the country and some parts of the world, Negrense artists a... [more]

Interview with Rosalia Bermudez
by J. Honoridez aka Joan of Art
2009-07-03
June 2009 - ArtSlant's Juried Winner, Rosalia Bermudez, discusses the inspiration and process behind her work.
Joan Honoridez-Mocorro: Your work, The Weight of Things got me. It seems to evoke a feeling of lightness, like floating on air. What were you thinking when you conceptualized it?
Rosalia Bermudez: The work is an installation, consisting of 200+ individual pieces of "paper" that are suspended from the ceiling by thin fishing line, that is hardly detectable from a distance - so they really do a... [more]

Kwatro Kantos mean Four Corners. Originally the expression is used to describe the four corners of a square bottle of a popular local gin, this unique art exhibit showcases four artists who just happened to be sitting on a square table and agreed on joining forces in a free schedule of Namit-Namit Pagkaon kag Taliambong Restogallery, loosely translated, Very Delicious Food and Art.
Thus, this is the first time that the four of them have exhibited as a group. The show opened on June 16 an... [more]

Dave Palanca is an artist to watch. Now 47, he has come to be identified with his pen-and-ink works depicting the sacadas or sugarcane plantation workers of his native province, Negros Occidental, Philippines.
Having finished pre-law and Nursing, Dave is able to separate his distinct courses from his art, as he insists that his precise anatomical drawings in school are totally different from his sacada artworks of people who are often depicted with enveloping arms and contorted face and feet... [more]

Whenever the Silay United Group of Artists opens their art exhibits, I would always be invited to do the opening prayer part. This was my third invitation already.
I finished my own children's summer art class in the morning of May 16, 2009 in Bacolod City and drove off to Silay City, dubbed as "The Paris of Negros Occidental" because of its well-preserved old and charming houses reminiscent of the glory days of the sugar industry. Art appreciation is even stronger in this part of the province a... [more]
