Valerie Piraino (b. 1981 Kigali, Rwanda) is a visual artist working in sculpture, installation, and drawing.  She looks to her transnational background in Sub-Saharan Africa and the United States as a point of departure to create more diverse notions of identity.  Her various bodies of work explore the landscape, economy and history of the African Diaspora.

Valerie Piraino received her BFA from the Maryland Institute College of Art in 2004 and her MFA from Columbia University in 2009.  She was artist-in-residence at the Studio Museum in Harlem in 2009-2010 and was nominated for the Rema Hort Mann Foundation Grant in 2011 and 2012.  Recent exhibitions and forthcoming exhibitions include Africa’s Out, Gladstone Gallery, New York, NY (2015), After Afropolitan, Weeksville Heritage Center, Brooklyn, NY (2015), Retreat, Valerie Carberry Gallery, Chicago, IL (2014), Round 39: Looking Back, Moving Forward, Project Row Houses, Houston, TX (2013), Present Future, Artissima, Turin, Italy (2013), Reconstruction, Crosstown Arts, Memphis, TN (2013), and Fore at the Studio Museum in Harlem, New York, NY (2012).  She lives and works in New York City.
