Suzette Bross is a photographer living and working in Chicago, Illinois. With an MFA from IIT, Bross has taught at Columbia College Chicago, the Milawaukee Institute of Art & Design and the Northwestern University Medical School. Her work has been exhibited across the United States as well as internationally.

Selected solo exhibitions include “Commute” Martha Schneider Gallery in 2007 and “Pregnant” at the Groton School in 2006. Suzette was also included in David Travis’ last show at the Art Institute of Chicago, “A Mind at Play.” Her work is part of the collections of The Museum of Contemporary Photography in Chicago, The Art Institute of Chicago and Mass College of Art in Boston. Bross was commissioned by Northwestern Memorial Hospital to create a portrait series of Chicago women.

Suzette is currently working on a landscape photography project along Lake Shore Drive using her camera phone. Her work is published in the current issue of the literary journal The Water~Stone Review. Suzette has self-published several books of her work including “Commute,” “Commute: Trucks” and “Commute: Water Towers.”

Suzette Bross subverts the instant imagery of her camera phone to re-imagine the landscape of her childhood. Bross pauses during her routine commute to take fleeting looks at the familiar landscape, sometimes seeing something new or newly seen. The motion of the drive warps and twists the images, just as memories of home, youth and truth warp and twist over the course of time. However, the instant flow of current information is paused as the truth in the bend in the road is questioned and the truth about her mark in time. What Bross sees seems to stay the same but is irrevocably altered through renewed and repeated tellings of her story.
