Statement & Resume

The California landscape is big and bold. A long-time transplant from North Carolina, I still have fresh eyes for the rugged, majestic countryside that I have the good fortune to call home. It has been said that native plants “give us a sense of where we are in this great land of ours.”1 Right now, this is where we are, and these works are a tribute to the grandeur (and sometimes brashness) of the species that share their California with us.

When I was living in the city of San Francisco my work was more graphic and crisp, but then I moved to Fairfax in Marin County and hours spent outside softened my palette and my choice of subject matter. Even my relationship to line has changed, now purposefully veering toward the more natural and imperfect.

Metal, glass and light are the perfect media to create my glowing, textured lightboxes. I allow the hot solder to set organically, painting with the soldering iron like a brush. I work with thick architectural glass, rich with bubbles and streaks. I burnish the painted panels with steel wool to let the underpaint peek through. Flip the switch, and tiny lights behind the glass shine like fireflies or stars, a small homage to the splendor of wild California.
