I have been working with blacksmithing since 1992. In the beginning, learning the techniques, I made traditional blacksmithing. Gradually, I found myself making sculptures. And here I am ;-)
My goal is to create sculptures that will make you smile, because there is something in the work that you recognize. I want my works to tell you about joy, but also about deep sorrow.
I am rather proud of being a blacksmith of the old school, so most of my works are made by forging, not by grinding and welding. This means my sculptures are almost always made of one piece of iron. You might not see it so clearly in these photographs, but it does add a touch of something special to the work, when you can see each blow of the hammer, compareable to the draw of a skilled painter's brush ;-)
I have been very fortunate in finding an artist companion in painter Tanja Aumanen. We like to work together. Do take a look at her page, too ! It is really exciting to combine flaming colours of paint with the modest grey wrought iron. We have been working and giving exhibitions together since 2004. We also share homepage.
2009 we were both invited to the 7th Biennale in Florence, Italy. Europe's largest exhibition of contemporary art - a great experince ;-)
We participated with the common works See No Evil and Sign Out. You can find them among my pictures.
I moved from Finland to Sweden in August 2011.
