Much has been said about the so-called “Belgian collector.” For captains of industry and local dentists alike, collecting contemporary art almost seems to be part of the Belgian DNA—which explains why the country is reputed for having the highest concentration of art collectors per square kilometer. Yet, as more and more Parisian collectors make the move to Brussels, the Belgian collector is becoming increasingly French. In addition to Art Brussels’ Portrait of the Collector as a Work of Art, the strong presence of collectors i... [more]

It was in the mid-eighties that the organizers of Art Brussels approached Amsterdam’s KunstRAI—later known as Art Amsterdam—with a proposition to merge the two fairs. Both events were then only a few years old and scraping along in a slowly developing art market. The new event would take place alternatingly in the Dutch and the Belgian capital. The Northern party declined. In 2007 Art Cologne changed its date from fall to spring. The world’s oldest fair for modern and c... [more]

Cars have been a fascination for artists since they sputtered onto the road. They are cultural objects, gleaming social markers, symbolic vessels of all that is modernity. Usually, there are one or two “art cars” in Miami, but in all the years I’ve made the rounds the most memorable was easily Pimp Juice, the fully customized Cadillac low-rider Jeffrey Deitch parked in front of Art Basel back in 2007. It was tricked out by the Chicago-based Puerto-Rican artist Dzine and it was... [more]

Artist Jacob Kassay is currently showing at Xavier Hufkens till 14th June 2012. In the first room, a series of ‘paintings’ is exhibited that have been created from studio remnants – each piece, before being stretched over its support, was once part of a larger piece of canvas purchased at an art supply store with the intention of being used. The artist kept these scraps, with the vague idea that, one day, they might be useful in his studio. Perhaps they’d be handy for wiping brus... [more]

Jacob Kassay at L&M Arts, Los Angeles July 21st, 2011 - September 2nd, 2011

Twenty-seven-year-old Jacob Kassay’s monochromes at L&M are functions of science and grace. Using a variation of electroplating, metal particles adhere to the surfaces like fields of glimmering dust. The scientific process, however, is the unobtrusive backdrop to subtle variations of color, dry matte bronzes next to pinks, pinks next to cool whites. The paintings have a light touch, and the impression is that Kassay’s L&M show wants to induce feelings of careful calibration and elegance, existenc... [more]

With "Cave Paintings" at the PSM gallery, Bob Nickas has arranged a taster for "Painting Abstraction," his survey book on the subject that will be published with Phaidon in September. Nickas cherry-picked a vastly varied selection of artists for the show after months of studio visits in New York, Los Angeles, London, Paris and Berlin. What the contributors all share is the ability to raise constructive questions about the nature of painting and to push and play with technique while also providin... [more]
