In 1968 the Ghanaian author Ayi Kwei Armah published a brutal and visceral novel of (then) contemporary, post-Independent Ghana, titled “The Beautyful Ones Are Not Yet Born”. Armah recounts an unnamed man’s struggle in a society rotten to the core, a result of the aftermath of colonialism, and the failures of the new regime. A dream deferred… The exhibition The Beautyful Ones takes as its starting point Armah’s utopian lament for a better Africa, and the ongoing problematics of the repres... [more]

Dineo Seshee Bopape at Mart House Gallery September 4th, 2010 - October 16th, 2010

Bopape’s mixed-media works transform the gallery into a fantastical wonderland inhabited by glittery paintings, colorful drawings, repetitive sounds, bright lights, and moving images. Do not be seduced, the signature painting warns. This artist is whimsi... [more]

New York, Nov. 2009 - Dineo Seshee Bopape is an artist whose work defies categorization: it spans a variety of media, from painting and drawing to video and installation; a variety of forms, from raw performance to the poetically abstract; and tackles subjects of gender, politics, race, psychology, sexuality, and more.  I had the opportunity to visit Bopape at her studio near Columbia University, where she is an MFA candidate. She showed me some of her video works, including some that are on view... [more]
