Julie Heffernan's paintings reveal her preoccupation with Baroque sensibilities-the interior spaces of her compositions often refer to grand ballrooms and ornate drawing rooms, while the figures are weighted by fantastical costumes overwrought with flora and fauna. She has an undergraduate degree in painting and printmaking from University of California, Santa Cruz and a graduate degree in painting from Yale. Her work has garnered critical attention in numerous publications, including Artforum, Art in America, FlashArt, Artnews, and The New York Times-last year a monograph, with essays by A. S. Byatt and David Humphrey, was published by University at Albany, State University of New York to accompany a traveling museum exhibition of her work. Her paintings are included in many public collections, including the Columbia Museum of Art, the Norton Museum of Art, the Weatherspoon Art Gallery, and the Zabludowicz Art Trust. She has been the recipient of numerous awards including grants from the New York Foundation for the Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts, as well as fellowships from the Fulbright Foundation and the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture. She lives and works in New York where she also shows with P.P.O.W. Gallery. She had her first solo exhibition at Catharine Clark Galley in 2006.
