Statement

Hemali Bhuta (born in 1978) received her MVA Part II (Painting) at the MS University, Baroda, 2009. She completed her diploma in Fine Arts (Painting) from L S Raheja School of Art, Mumbai, 2003. She received a Diploma in Interior Designing and Decorations from Sophia College, Mumbai, 1997. Bhuta has just concluded a residency at the Yorkshire Sculpture Park (2012) and exhibited her work at the Sculpture Park at Frieze Art Fair, London (2012). The Hangover of Agarlum was Hemali's first solo venture at Project 88, Mumbai in 2010. She has been part of many shows including Lines of Thought, Parasol Unit, London (2012), “India: Art Now”, Arken (2012 ‐ 2013), Indian Highway IV, MAXXI, Rome (2011) and Indian Highway III, MAC, Lyon (2010), Tracing Reality curated by Nicole Rampa, Gallery Kashya Hildebrand, Zurich,2010; Ballard Estate, curated by Gitanjali Dang, Religare arts initiative, Delhi, 2010; Revisioning Materiality Part II, Gallery Espace, Delhi, 2009; Moment as Monument, at Tranvancore Gallery, by Thomas Erben Gallery (New York) and Gallery Seven (Delhi), as a part of the Art Summit 2009, Delhi; Video Wednesdays, curated by Johny ML at Gallery Espace, Delhi, 2008‐2009.

The artist was selected for an exchange program (2009‐ 2010) at the École Nationale Supérieure des BeauxArts, Paris. In 2009, she also received the FICA Emerging Artist Award, Delhi and a residency at the Montalvo arts centre, California. She is also a finalist for the Rolex Mentor Protégé Program under Mr. Anish Kapoor.

Certificate course in Weaving, Dyeing and Printing at Weavers’ Service Centre, Mumbai, 2006.
Currently pursuing M.V.A part II (post diploma, painting) at the M.S.U., Baroda. 2008

AWARDS:

2010 Selected as a finalist for “The Rolex Mentor Protege Arts Initiative" in the discipline of visual arts under the British artist Anish Kapoor for 2010.
2010 Is a recipient of the fica award for emerging contemporary artist of india and will receive an eight-week studio-residency at Montalvo Arts Center, California and a solo show at Vadehra Art Gallery, New Delhi
2009-2010 Recipient of the INLAKS Scholarship.
2008 Nasreen Mohammedi award for best work at the M.S.University in the discipline of painting.
2004-05 Senior Scholarship from Lalit Kala Akademi for the year.
2003 AIFACS Society Prize for Painting in the student’s category at the Bombay Art Society.

2009 Was invited as a resident artist for a writers workshop at the Guild art gallery for 10 days in june 2009.
2007 One month residency program at Partapur, Rajasthan, organized by Sandarbh in November / December 2007.
I was one of the participating artists at a video editing workshop conducted by Open Circle, mumbai.
Has conducted workshops in painting at L S Raheja School of Art, Bandra, Mumbai, Sai Chitra Kala School, Pune, SPSMBH College of Architecture, Kolhapur.
