The sound of cracking coming from people’s mouths and underfoot was perhaps the first indication that there was something different about this opening. The third and newest, largest version of Xu Bing's The Living Word installation is ever so appropriate at the Morgan Library and Museum's glass-enclosed Gilbert Court. The artist spent his childhood perusing books in university reading rooms where his mother was studying for her Library Science degree, and he is undoubtedly delighted for Pierpont Morgan's library to serve as a temporary residence for his work.
