Last weekend Rockaway Beach’s Fort Tilden opened its gates to a crowd of art connoisseurs, local creatives, and bronzed beach goers for a day of art and activism supporting Rockaway Beach. The Rockaway Artists Alliance and the National Parks Service hosted the hordes of art lovers who came to witness the opening of the site specific art installations (on view through September 1st), a free open-air performance by rock legend Patti Smith, and a Walt Whitman poetry reading by hipster heartthrob... Walking into Camille Henrot’s first UK solo exhibition feels like walking into a storyboard of one of her haptic montage video works: a mishmash of images, advertisements, books, magazines, sculptures and anthropological artefacts are laid out in an entirely blue space. The Pale Fox is indeed an 'installation version' of the acclaimed film Grosse Fatigue (2013), which was presented at the 55th Venice Biennale last year. The two works are the outcome of a long research process at the Smit... [more]

French artist Camille Henrot spins fantasies; in her solo show The Strife of Love in a Dream at Jhaveri Contemporary, she’s more the charmer drawing one in than the snakes she films. First, a series of ink drawings don’t just spellbind, but weave a phantasmagoria of curious constructs in curious engagements. Next, in a sharply woven tapestry, with sibilant dexterity, she takes the outsider view of exotic India, of snakes and faith, by its horns, and turns it inside out with a clever... [more]

That day, the Yellow Emperor showed the poet his palace. They left behind, in long succession, the first terraces on the west which descend, like the steps of an almost measureless amphitheater, to a paradise or garden whose metal mirrors and intricate juniper hedges already prefigured the labyrinth. They lost themselves in it, gaily at first, as if condescending to play a game, but afterwards not without misgiving, for its straight avenues were subject to a curvature, ever so slight, but con... Though a non-descript, signless space, bricked and fortified with bars, she looks soft inside, the toughness dropping away. Opened now—wide by hand—she's entered into with cautionary eagerness. Inside her arrangement appears fixed as if one mussed her carefully constructed visage it would be righted magically to how it began.   Her bare walls provide room for thoughts to bounce toward and from which to peel away. These thoughts lap down upon desks, huddled together, which rest waiting for a ne... [more]

Knowing nothing about the TV show that provides the inspiration for this exhibition—and not really caring to learn more—I might suggest that the resonance of “Lost,” as theme, has at least as much to do here with the space of the Barnsdall itself. Passing from the entrance hall to the center of the exhibition area, one inevitably pauses, slightly disoriented, and wonders whether to go to the right or the left. The choice, in the end, matters little—either way, one enters an unaccountably labyri... [more]

This preview-style presentation of a new generation of artists will occupy the exhibition spaces of the Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris/ARC and the Palais de Tokyo in their entirety. With forty artists occupying in all some 5000 square metres, "Dynasty" signals both the commitment of the two institutions to the emergent art scene and a new stage in the ongoing cooperation between the two wings of the building. Following the guidelines laid down by Fabrice Hergott,

Camille Henrot. In the manner of a geologist or archaeologist, Camille Henrot excavates culture - her raw material - in successive strata and layers. Far from wishing to rationalise things, Camille Henrot intensifies the complexity of our relationship to the world, working by mea... [more]
