I recently dropped into the Wolesley Restaurant in Piccadilly for tea and stayed over two hours (my chatty acquaintance!). We enjoyed afternoon tea at £19.75, presented on an ornate stand, with several levels of pastries and finger sandwiches. Originally built in 1921 as a prestigious showroom for Wolesley cars, the renovated... [more]

Littlewhitehead plays Dog at Gimpel Fils

What is it with emerging artists? They love to take a walk on the dark side, and an atmosphere of lurking danger and death is tangible in a crop of current installations. Not that I dislike them, the morbid sets are often more like a scary movie, and there’s a tongue in cheek quality that retains a lighter touch. Downstairs at Gimpel Fils I found an installation by the duo littlewhitehead (Craig Little and Blake Whitehead b.1965); littlewhitehead have recently exhibited in Bloomberg... [more]

Thomas Schütte: United Enemies at Faggionato Fine Art

We know Thomas Schütte, the Düsseldorf based artist, from his colourful glass sculpture, ‘Model for a Hotel’, that has occupied the fourth plinth in Trafalgar Square (soon to be colonised by Antony Gormley’s constant changing appearance of citizen performers). Schütte is a polymath, with an immensely varied portfolio ranging from iconic figure sculptures to architectural models, ceramics and graphic pieces. His work is at once disturbing, repellent and hugely entertaining... [more]

‘I hope that we occasionally can see them; the solid constructions that surround us, that we can defeat our expectations and leave behind the pessimism that says all worlds will look and feel the same.’ -John Riddy
The fourth exhibition of photographs by John Riddy takes a deceptively subdued look at the London landscape. Riddy makes a quiet journey around the urban sprawl recording a wide range of subjects from council estates to institutions such as the Bank of England, w... [more]

ISA GENZKEN 'OPEN SESAME' at The Whitechapel Art Gallery

Isa Genzken at Whitechapel Gallery

A turbulent voice of new German sculpture launches the brilliantly expanded Whitechapel Art Gallery, re-opened to an eager audience in April. It's a kind of split identity exhibition that assaults the senses and kicks into the imagination. A graduate of the Berlin and Dusseldorf academies in the 1970s Genzken's sculptural playground bears the hallmarks of Professor Joseph Beuys, in her direct acknowledgement of raw material, concrete, aluminium plates and epoxy resin moulds, trans... Coming from a bright spring day on the South Bank where weekend visitors enjoy the street performers and living statues, and ride the fun fair carousel, the mood of light hearted reverie is echoed by Mark Wallinger’s idiosyncratic collection. Entitled The Russian Linesman from a notorious 1966 football match decision, the show draws on disparate sources ranging from Albrecht Dűrer to Fred Sandback, from a three millennia old Sphinx to fearful unedited news footage of the recent ci... ‘The most perfect picture' Gerhard Richter, the great and elusive German artist, described his choice in the early ‘60s to use found snapshots as the primary source for his neo-realist paintings. Born in Dresden, East Germany in 1932 Richter began his career as a social realist mural artist under the communist regime, escaping to the West in 1961 just before the Berlin Wall went up. A student at the Düsseldorf Academy under Professor Joseph Beuys, Richter connected with avant... [more]

A Fairy Tale of New York

An encounter with Dan Colen's new work at Gagosian Gallery, Davies Street, was strange to say the least. An attendant opened the large glass door to an elegant exhibition space with only one work presented for view. The effect of emptiness was immediate and disorienting and attention wandered to find anchor points; a white chair, a small stack of booklets on a plinth, and back to the painting to absorb its suggestive impact. Colen's two-part exhibition has run since November with an... [more]
