I am a painter, photographer, and filmmaker. I have also worked as an art teacher. A large body of my paintings can be described as “Magical Realism,” while my photography explores both concept and abstraction. My interest runs the gamut from the figure/portrait to minimalist textures. A complex and unusual color palate is a defining part of all my work, regardless of medium. For the past few years I have been exploring two styles/themes in painting.
The first group of work re-visits found images and objects (usually figurative) from the forties and fifties. I sometimes incorporate a scorpion, as well as words/phrases into otherwise child-like, “bucolic” settings. An unexpected or incongruous element is often part of these compositions.
The other style of artwork is painted and drawn on stretched velvet. The velvet gets very tight when it is painted on and allows an interesting, almost fresco-like surface to work upon. This medium seems to call for a more classical rendering, and I have been creating some Bottecelli-inspired figures as well as botanicals.
I have had solo shows in Bogota, Colombia, and exhibited in Los Angeles, New York, Miami, and Venice, Italy. Goup shows include participation with Art Basel Miami, Los Angeles Art Fair (“Supersonic”) and at La Luz de Jesus (“Everything But the Kitschen Sync”) gallery in Los Angeles as well as at 80 Washington Square E. in New York City.
I recently completed a Masters of Studio Art at NYU. In 2006, I lived in Venice, Italy as part of the program studying painting and Italian art history.
