"Recently emerging from Cal State Long Beach, John Koller has been burning through the history of Modernist painting, incorporating what works for him and moving on to the next idiom. His recent gnarly architectural abstractions are his most well-synthesized to date."-Doug HarveyWriter, Curator [more]

In science, the “observer effect” refers to the phenomenon that the act of observation itself changes the subject of observation. Quantum mechanics goes a step further and takes for granted that a system cannot be observed without also being changed. The solution is to consider the observer as part and parcel of the system. Observer Effect, curated by artist Carrie Gundersdorf and Gallery 400 director Lorelei Stewart, tests the hypothesis that artistic practices are analogous to scientific processes... [more]

Dec. 2008 - ArtSlant writer, Catherine Wagley, discussed form, process, history and practice with L.A. based artist, Steve Roden via email. "Installation View", 2008; Courtesy of the artist Catherine Wagley: When we talked the other day, you said that your interests are as impure as your work. I love that idea. What if your art is tainted by the history and cultural layer it interacts with, but tainted in an enticing sort of way? How do your wide-reaching interests in everything from Rimbaud... [more]

Cue the Monty Python reel. The constant recurrence of uprooting and upheaval hit me soon after the first interval of total engrossment, quickly riven as I hit the wall placard introducing the next artist. The show is chaptered in such a way as you meander. The LA Paint show, spanning ten such chapters, featuring 60 works, is as admirably deep as it is wide, often featuring five or six large paintings. Located in the OMCA's airy Great Hall, medium-to-high density pieces tax viewers heavily and rewar... [more]

Steve Roden at SUSANNE VIELMETTER LOS ANGELES PROJECTS June 21st, 2008 - August 2nd, 2008

More is less and less is more for Steve Roden. The thick paintings in “Lines and Spaces” at Susanne Vielmetter Projects seem succinct despite their wrought under-painting, the layers melting together to become a single, indulgent experience. The main gallery is filled with mellow, full-bodied oil and acrylic paintings, all of which have idiosyncratic, music-inspired titles. “when sun is like rain. when rain is like sun,” hung at the back of the space, looks like what migh... Lecia Dole-Recio, Will Fowler, Steve Roden, Barry Le Va at Richard Telles Fine Art February 2nd, 2008 - March 31st, 2008

ARTFORUM critic Michael Ned Holte loves Barry Le Va – he loves his conceptual layering and clarity; he loves his rigor. Taking Le Va’s work as a jumping off point, his current curatorial effort at Richard Telles Fine Art gathers artists of similar spirit, artists who love puzzles and mental games. The highlight of the show are Lecia Dole-Recio’s handmade collages, humble works which reminds one of the old Bauhaus lessons that Josef Albers would teach his students at Black Mountain College--where...
