Statement

Kate Kretz was born in Grove City, PA, and was raised in upstate New York and France. She earned a Certificat de la Civilization Francaise from the Sorbonne in Paris, received her BFA in drawing and painting from Binghamton University, and her MFA in Painting from the University of Georgia.

Her work has appeared in over 30 International and 65 domestic newspapers including The International Herald Tribune, The New York TImes, The Los Angeles Times, The Washington Post, The Boston Globe, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, The Miami-Herald, and the Huffington Post, and has been featured in ArtPapers, Surface Design, Vanity Fair Italy, ELLE Japon, FiberArts, American Craft, Australian Cosmopolitan, Foam, and Boca magazines. Her controversial painting “Blessed Art Thou” received news coverage on NBC, CBS, ABC, CNN and Fox networks, followed by hundreds of international news sources. The work continues to be published in textbooks and journals around the world.

Her one-person exhibitions include The Frost Museum in Miami, Belger Art Center in Kansas City, Catholic University in Washington, D.C., The Fort Lauderdale Museum, Fort Collins MOCA (3 person show), Chelsea Galleria, and The Fiber Arts Foundation in Amherst, MA.

Group exhibitions include the Museum of Art & Design in NY, Van Gijn Museum in The Netherlands, Kunstraum Kreuzberg Bethanien in Berlin, Wignall Museum, Katonah Museum, Lyons Wier Ortt Gallery and 31Grand Gallery in NY, Huntsville Museum of Art, Georgia Museum of Art, Penn State University, Exit Art, Morris Museum of Art, Binghamton University Art Museum, Georgia State University, Telfair Museum, Georgia State University, and the Museo Medici in Tuscany. In 2005, she left a position as BFA Director and Associate Professor at Florida International University in Miami to paint full-time in her studio. She currently lives in the Washington, DC, area.
