These hand drawn images are about studying a formal relationship between pen and ink on paper, architecture, landscape and formal geometry.

I was always inspired by etchings I had looked at, and in 1995 chose ink on paper based on my early experience with hand drafting in architecture.

Ink on mylar, canson or vellum paper was hand drawn.

The thickness of the acid free, 100 lb Strathmore paper gives a sense of carving or etching in stone or the impression of something permanent.

There is also a notion of not erasing what the pen first puts down.

These drawings are an extension of that principle with the subject and composition based on my curiosity or predisposition at the time for a certain formal relationship in the drawing.

The primary drive of these images is I want to see what I haven't seen before or am curious to see now. Then I can study the composition and relationships of the line work, color, surfaces and technique.

I also wanted to achieve a density and legitimacy in the fact that the ink is permanent, it takes allot of time, and the image does get finished completely so as to stand on it's own for all time.

History:

Began conceptual drawings for Anschel Ink drawings starting in 1995 after completing Charcoal rendering for the Regal Theater in Mumbai.

Drew ink drawing Millennium in December 1999.

Full size 14x17 artwork was reproduced as New Years Cards in 1999.

Continued Anschel ink Drawings for past decade.

2004 conceived and created www.anschelgallery.com online to showcase my ink drawings.

In 2007 decided work had to be shown off-line.

January 2008 self published book "Ink Drawings By Jason Anschel David Shirriff. Book reproduces 31 ink drawings done over an 8 year period displayed in cronoligical order. (available at mysoiree.net)

In October 2008 was a winner in juried show for October at Art Gallery Projekt30.com; Several drawings were chosen for the October exhibit and become permanently Stored in Projekt30's archives.

December 2009 exhibited at the Berkeley Art Center in Members group showcase, Berkeley California. Ink Drawing "Duo" Exhibited.

 January 2009 Ink drawings were in artist showcase of Fabrik Magazine's issue for the LA Art show 2009. Magazine was distributed to 50,000+ people at the art show.

March 2009 won in artist showcase at Artslant with ink drawing "Millennium".

April 2009 won in artist showcase at Artslant with ink drawing "Luna Vista".

May - June 2009 exhibited ink drawing "Light Crossing" at Pro Arts Gallery in Oakland for the East Bay open Studios 2009.

June 2009 Exhibited and Open Studio of Anschel Ink Drawings at the Filbert Street Studios in Oakland, California.

June 2009 began limited edition archival prints for 3 ink drawings: "Millennium, "Luna Vista" and "Moreau 2005".

July 2009 won in juried show "Sanguine" at Projekt30.com. Several ink drawing permanently archived on Projekt30.com's server.

August 2009 produced first crystal engraving of Ink drawing "Aspirations". (available at mysoiree.net)

August 2009 exhibited at Berkeley Fine Art Studio for a Mysoiree event.

September 2009 won in artist showcase at Artslant with ink drawing "Aspirations"

October 2009 exhibited at Berkeley Fine Art Studio for a Mysoiree event.

October 2009 spoke about sustainable design at the ASAI (American Society of Architectural Illustrators)  conference in Miami. Ink Drawing 8.5 x 11 digital print "ediface canyon" donated in silent aucton to benefit ASAI.

December 2009 donated limited eition prints of 3 ink drawings, "Millennium", "Luna Vista" and "Moreau 2005" to silent auction to benefit Oakland Children's Hospital.

Recent shows:

Arts Council of San Leandro Juried show. The jury selected "Biomorphic City, Anschel 5.2008" in Mid April to be in their show of local bay area artists. The 2 week show, along with several other community events, was held at the San Leandro Public Library and ended April 30th, 2010.
