“137.5 Degrees” by Katie Holten; crocheted yarn and tacks By David Leigh This is a preview of LAND/ART. I state this up front simply as a foil against the gargantuan nature in describing the entire project, which includes more than 60 artists and 25 arts organizations that have filled out their summer and fall schedules with exhibitions, site-specific projects, lectures, performances, tours, poetry readings and film screenings that relate to the subject of land-based art. What most of us... [more]

There's something undeniably, seductively American about the concept of the road trip. The phrase necessarily conjures images of vast expanses of land, endless open roads, lonely pit-stop diners, and garish neon motel signs forever winking VACANT into the night—images all uniquely American. It's no wonder; qualities inherited from our pioneering predecessors—a (sub)conscious desire to embrace uncertainty, pursue possibility, seek the unknown, and, of course, to be free—find perfect expression... Mythos, epiphany, identity, anguish, the lost and lovelorn, cryptic messages, hurts, triumphs, ecstatic joys: the stuff of great art, the reasons we tell stories.
