MARY CHANG
ARTIST STATEMENT
I make art simply because I have to, I am exploring. I pull inspiration from every aspect of life. I translate energy into compositions of their own rhythm and life force. My aim is to give color, texture and form, the freedom to compliment and agitate, contain and scatter into the synergy of emotion and composition. I experiment with acrylic, oil, airbrush, hand ground pigments, threads and graphite. The printmaking techniques I employ are monotypes, chine collé and photo etching.
I bring things of different nature together and examine the possibilities. I paint on a variety of surfaces; doors, windows, wood, glass, canvas and paper. I am in a constant search. These materials are new beginnings, an opportunity to create new life. I mix pigments to create intense color. In working with these materials I am able to create layers of paint, scratched surfaces and make markings. I use pressure and a variety of movements with my brush stroke on canvas and paper. I twist, paint and overlap canvas and paper playfully as in a childhood game, thus discovering the finished work.
