ARTIST STATEMENT
I have a simultaneous repulsion and attraction to the points of interaction between calculated rigidities and natural fluids: hips bubbling out the tops of stiff blue jeans; the drooling jowls of a coyote as he stands in a midtown concrete driveway. Cheeks pill up like a tatty sweater, with graphite-colored lint balls composed of metallic street dust and engine oil spills from my pores. I pinch then roll these off with a sense of gross satisfaction. The city's organism acts on my body even at the molecular level, and is measured in particles of corrosive air as it mingles with skin. This is the crowding of a chaotic body into a confinement too small for what must unfurl. It is the battle of nature and systems of engineering. Organs mingle with synthetic fibers, graph paper patterns transform into hair, and discarded socks are shed like molted skin. Paint is alternately scrunched with fists, poured and knifed, then threaded with delicate line work. It is a process of construction then rupture, initiating a conversation between these transient bodies and the rationalized environments that they live in.
