Sarah Stone Artist Statement

I live in Los Angeles, a wonderfully diverse and rich city composed of hundreds of communities separated not only by freeways but by different economies, cultures, and ethnicities, which sometimes become walls between us.

After visiting prehistoric art caves in France and Australia, I was profoundly moved by the discovery that all of us descended from a small band of humans that originated on the Eastern coast of Africa. From there we walked, branching off into new tribes with distinct beliefs, customs, and attributes, settling all over the planet. But, as separate as we can feel from each other, threads of our original tribe still bind us together.

It is with this idea that I begin my paintings, connecting archetypal dots and merging cultural roots.

My themes revolve around transition, growth, evolution and connection, integrating totemic imagery, biological elements such as veins and branches, and symbolic runes to deconstruct our illusory perception of separateness and detachment from other people, cultures and life on the planet.
