"Long Beach is indeed a special place, and there have been many funky things going on here over the years, and there had yet to be a 100% funk festival in the LBC, until WE put on the first LB Funk Fest in the summer of 2009. The Long Beach Funk Fest has manifested to bring an event of uncut funk magnitude to Long Beach.

This is not a jazz funk fest. This is not a hip hop funk fest. This is not an old skool show. It’s not a rock festival with a few funky bands. This is all funk and nuttin but the funk. This is a festival to bring together funk fans old and new, to show where funk came from and where it’s going.

Our goal is to bring the funk music community together (musicians and fans) and invoke the spirit of the great 70′s funk fests, and to help nurture and develop funk’s acceptance and acknowledgment as a complete North American musical genre. Much in the way jazz and blues are considered “American art forms”, funk is American music too, our music, and has influenced countless other genres, musicians, and people around the world…
The Long Beach Funk Fest is a green-driven festival, involving green sponsors and educating in ways to live with less impact on our environment. We strive to have the bulk of vendors and partners come from green companies and organizations. The Long Beach Funk Fest also helps to raise funds towards music education in Long Beach. This is a community-based event, involving the community and giving back to the community.

Each year the artist lineup is hand picked to reflect the mission of the LBFF. We also feature many prominent LA area dj’s spinning funk all day/night long between bands and at the dj tent. Visual art is also heavily featured, including many live paintings taking place throughout the festival site. Be on the lookout for possible pre/after parties for the funk fest. We know like the last two years, many funk fans will be coming from out of town and even from other countries, so we want them to have options to make it a full weekend. There are many hotel options within walking distance in the downtown area. There are also several amazing restaurants, shops, and public attractions all within walking distance of the festival site. Long Beach is an amazing place to visit with so much stuff to do."

Art, Music & Culture is proud to present “Open Your Eyes” an exhibition featuring up and coming artists Mer Young and Imelda Cervantes.

Join us on Friday July 15th for the opening reception with special performance by recording artists ILHAME PARIS with music set by DJ NADIR.

The selected artworks will be on display July 15th, 2011 through August 15th, 2011.

MER is a self taught, emerging visual artist, based in Long Beach, California. She has an extraordinary sense of observation and is able to capture the beauty of faces that inspire her. MER shares the importance of better understanding people is to “Open your eyes to a world beyond your own”. Her paintings have been in many group exhibitions in Southern California and Mexico. Her vision is to also educate through art with multicultural focus.

Imelda Cervantes is a self-taught artist that is open to many types of art; she is a painter working with acrylics, she has also delved in the Mexican art called “repujado”. Imelda went to the University of California, Irvine and graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science. Aside from focusing on her career after college, she has dedicated more time for her passion for art. The reverence she has for life; the cup of coffee in the morning with a “pan dulce”, the evenings she enjoys looking at the ocean next to her husband, the road trips up and down the coast, where she notices beautiful views, the everyday possibility of learning or seeing something new and inspiring; these are all images that capture her imagination. Imelda has an adventurous personality, strong spirit and demonstrates a deep passion for her art. She has an extreme pride of her Mexican heritage and you can see that through some of her latest art pieces. Imelda loves to visit museums, art galleries, cultural and social events for inspiration and to enrich her mind. She is a true believer that art may be somewhat of a picture diary if one makes it out that way. In Imelda’s art there is one thing in common, that it will always be colorful, like her spirit and the life she creates for herself by always surrounding herself with beauty and the experience of a good time.
[Photo disclaimer: The picture used in our promo flyer shows some of the Imelda Cervantes artworks along with other artists’ works from a previous show she was part of.]

ILHAME (pronounced Eelum) has Morocco in her blood, Paris in her heart and music in her soul. ILHAME PARIS always knew music would be her constant muse. Born in the 17th District of Paris, ILHAME'S first musical experience was alongside her older sister, having innocent fun imitating famous musicians singing the songs of Soul, Funk and R&B stars such as Luther Vandross, Rose Royce and Bill Withers. In grade school ILHAME'S music teacher noticed her natural talent as a vocalist and encouraged her to pursue her love of music.

ILHAME decided to finance her own album. In 2005, she traveled to Los Angeles and recorded a major part of her debut album. As ILHAME states, “I live, eat and sleep music. I love what I do”. In addition to recording, she has sold out shows at Le Reservoir and La Scene concert venues in Paris. She’s opened shows for ERYKAH BADU, DWELE, VAN HUNT and toured with THE ROOTS. She also opened for QUESTLOVE at The Roxy in Los Angeles.

ILHAME'S cover of Bob Marley’s “Waiting in Vain” has garnered strong internet airplay and effusive critical acclaim. Her version is sung in French and Arabic. She has collaborated with SHAFIQ from SA-RA, singing on tracks he produced and is featured on his song "Le Star". She has also recorded tracks featuring T3 from SLUM VILLAGE and Big Pooh from LITTLE BROTHER. ILHAME has also recorded a song with music produced by NICOLAY of THE FOREIGN EXCHANGE.

MER is an emerging visual artist, based in Long Beach, California. She has an extraordinary sense of observation and is able to capture the beauty of faces that inspire her. MER shares the importance of better understanding people is to “Open your eyes to a world beyond your own”. Her paintings have been in many group exhibitions in Southern California and Mexico. George Jacob’s uninhibited use of color creates vivid portraits, ethereal landscapes and blooming abstracts. His intention is to help elevate human awareness, bringing people to higher states of consciousness through the viewing of his work, awakening the joy and tranquility in people’s lives.Through modeling George was given the fortunate opportunity to travel the world, and study the depths of different cultures, religions, and philosophies. During his travels, he took several vision quests and personal journeys of his own. As he states in his own words, “I love that I am able to bring beauty and peace to others through my art. I paint with joy, hoping that it will sing to others and give us a glimpse of the invisible wonder of Divine Love. Painting came to me like a gift from God and continues to unfold as a journey of wonder and discovery. To see the soul come through the faces I paint, gives me great happiness.”

Eric Valdez began producing paintings that quickly found their way into various group art exhibitions. Though he had been able to effectively express himself with little formal training, Eric realized that he would soon feel limited by his own abilities and recently began to further his artistic education. He is presently studying art and graphic design at both Pasadena City College and Platt College.
Eric has produced works that have been directly influenced by all aspects of popular culture, but it is music that has had the greatest influence on the majority of his paintings.

Anthony Castro is a photographer who has resided in Long Beach, California for the last four years. He lives a pedestrian lifestyle. Walking, he feels at a slower pace and as a result has gained a visual luxury. Currently his photography is part autobiography. Anthony tends to shoot subjects he feels a common identify with, part documentary the actual taking of the photograph, and part fiction. Fiction is the Photoshop element of his work, Photoshop lets him remove some of the reality and put in some fantasy.

Diego "Yeyo" Aguirre Macedo, also known as “Yeyo Internacinal,” was born in Santa Ana, California from parents of Mascota, Jalisco, started his career as an artist in 2006. His style as an artist has been established as an urban-realist with different themes of society, history, culture, and nature."Yeyo," his nickname in the art world, attended California State University Fullerton where he graduated with a double major in drawing/painting and art education. He received his teaching credential in the same university to become a professional instructor in the arts. Also, he attended Goldenwest College and graduated with a degree in fine arts. Since 2006, Yeyo has participated in various exhibitions in southern California in the cities of Hollywood, Los Angeles, Santa Ana, Pomona, Fullerton, Anaheim, Long Beach, and Irvine. some of the well known galleries and events that he has participated in were Project Ethos Avalon in Hollywood, Forgotten Saints in Hollywood, SCA Gallery in Pomona, the Yost in Santa Ana, the Regent in Los Angeles, Koo's gallery and AMC Gallery in Long Beach, and Plaza Gallo in Los Angeles. Also he was invited as a special guest artist on Titan Indie Underground Radio with Sister Savior aka DJ Gracek. In 2009, for the first time in his career he exposed his paintings in the state of his parents in Jalisco, Mexico being a special guest artist of the National Foundation of Independent Artists for the 2009 art tour in Guadalajara, Tlaquepaque, Mascota, and Guayabitos, Nayarit. On august 2009, Yeyo started his art movement "RUN MTA" (I Run Mascota) in the city of Mascota. During his six month stay, Yeyo opened up an art studio where he taught art to the community and exhibited the works of his students. On February 9th, 2010, Yeyo was recruited by Ixtaccihuatl Castro Medina, director of the Casa de Cultura, to promote artworks produced in the city of Mascota. On February 13th, 2010 Yeyo began the new artistic movement of Casa de Cultura in "El Parquesito" currently known today to the local artists as "El Parque de los Artistas". Today, local artists paint every weekend at this location to create awareness of artistic Mascotense talent. Today, Diego "Yeyo" Aguirre is currently working on more artwork in Southern and Baja California in preparation for another art tour with NFIA and with other art organizations.

Bart Cooper – Bart is an Award winning Artist that is relatively new to the fine Art scene, though in no way new to Art. Bart has been creating Art since he was a child. Further developing his skills Bart graduated from a BV Technical Institute with a degree in visual communications. Immediately after graduation he was offered a job to teach as an instructor for the school in which he had just graduated from. After teaching for a few years Bart left to worked corporately for the American Bible Society. He eventually broke away as a free lance studio Artist. Throughout his entire career creating art for major corporations and studios, he always had a passion to continue his journey in fine art. He is best known for his mastery of colors and the ability to contrast them in a uniquely captivating manner creating vivid and explosive works.

Efrain Martinez, a 24 year old, works and lives in Los Angeles. He was born in Oaxaca, Mexico and moved to Los Angeles at the age of seven. For him growing up in Los Angeles was not as glamorous as it sounded. His Parents had to do what they could to get by and as they worked, his teen years were divided 60 % of his time went to school and younger siblings, 39 % went to graffiti, and the other percent went to learn some basic art skills. He has learned skills through practice and fellow artists influence. His current art reflects animation, drawings and painting, aerosol and graphic arts. He attends Santa Monica Community College when he has time. These days he has changed his street art to canvas. His style is a fusion of urban graffiti inspiration and has integrated acrylic aerosol on canvas and mixed media. He has participated in art exhibitions at various Los Angeles venues and surrounding cities and has also painted live at various art venues and festivals. Efrain, at his young age his cofounder of Vees Cafe (veescafe.net). In the coffee shop you can find many of his artworks and his artists’ friend Jason Saunder's artwork displayed. He believes art can improve your quality of life, especially when you share it with others. He encourages people to be resourceful, be Creative, and to communicate their Message.

Efren Luna is an artist/curator that has as a goal to continue creating artworks that benefit and engage the most number of members of society such as murals, themed works, participation in cultural events, exhibitions and live painting. He has participated in festivals. He has organized live painting and installations at community celebrations and art exhibitions. Because it is important for him to promote the arts, he is the Founder and Director of the organization ART, MUSIC & CULTURE (A.M.C) with aims to reach artists and communities locally and worldwide through shows and events and cultural festivities. A.M.C’s goal is to extend information for art, music and cultural events to artists and communities and to engage artists and communities in the current art scene. Raul has been painting for almost 20 years. With a long history of education and scholarships, Raul ended up attending the Art Institute of Chicago. He explained his formal training has enabled him to pour out his emotions fully into his work. He says‘‘My works are expression of impressions that dwell in my subconscious. Daily, we are exposed to or bombarded by millions of stimuli. Whether we accept or reject them, the truth is they affect us. I respond by and large, based on intuitive interpretations and through any medium at hand. “My artworks are interpretation of what nature (physical world) is not but what the subconscious sees it to be".

Efren Alvarez is a San Francisco based artists. His works includes both paintings and photography. In this show, we will be exhibiting photography works from his album “Mexican Wild Flowers” these select beautiful images give you a close look at the wild and stunning exquisiteness. Come and enjoy these images as they will also be available for purchase.

Robin Bott comes from a family of artists and her creativity has been fostered by her parents since a child. Following this path, she has taught children in many local schools and art programs including Palos Verdes Art Center, Angels Gate Cultural Center, Los Angeles County of Education (LACOE), Long Beach Parks and Recreation Arts and Music Camp, along with visiting local schools to teach under-privileged kids. Her creatively designed art projects have been adopted by other instructors throughout the area. Robin is an imaginative and versatile artist who works in many mediums. She finds that working in 3-dimension allows her more avenues for self-expression. Her works are frequently noted for their whimsical style and her inspiration often comes from dreams. Robin loves working with children and teaches art to all ages from pre-schoolers to adults. For the past three years, her focus has been on creating and teaching others to create mosaic murals. The murals have been either commissioned, or created by students and donated to their school or institution. Robin has conducted art workshops for kids at the 2nd Saturday Art Walk in the East Village Arts District in downtown Long Beach. Children’s workshops sometimes include a puppet show featuring a variety of puppet characters that she has created including everyone from “Vera the Magnificent” a flamboyant mystic to “Dr. Smiley” a toothless dentist. Currently, she is teaching art classes through Angels Gate Cultural Center, Palos Verdes Art Center, and LACOE.

THANKS TO EVERYONE WHO WAS PART OF

“THE LIVE FESTIVAL”

“THE LIVE FESTIVAL” Art & Music Show on Saturday September 19th, 2009. Our show consisted of 3 events in 3 separate spaces within one venue (THE CAT CLUB West Hollywood, CA). An alternative gallery space, the patio was transformed into an alternative gallery space. A VIP Room, transformed into a mini gallery with an artist painting live. And the main bar with live bands, DJs and rappers on stage.

· Our main exhibition space was the patio. This was transformed into an Alternative Space Gallery. Our creative people made a site-specific-installation based on architectural designs that served us both visually and interactively. The design was both a ceiling for the patio and a wall to hang artworks. It was design to become a hanging mechanism for artworks. This was an amazing installation! The alternative gallery space has been described as one big installation.

An extra room inside the venue on the upper level (VIP Room) was transformed into a mini gallery with prolific live painter artist Michael Pukac painting live.

The Live theme also included live music by bands and DJs at the stage next to the bar. The stage and bar area included 3 small visual designs that connected visually with the alternative gallery in the back. Also the wall had 1 LCD screen showing a 3D animation video design of the Installation.

Installation/Design/construction/setup…and more

First I would like to thank Jesus Eduardo Magaña, Paulina Boyer-Magaña, Andrew Jason, Jackie Munoz, Jarod Allen, and JJ Paredes @ WWW.APHIDoIDEA.COM . They have been there since day one and have worked extra hard to assure an awesome Installation. Their team work contributed to the success of the installation. Their efforts and collaborative work were key to the success of the show. I would like to thank everyone on their side, their friends who came out to assist with construction and set up and video. I know that many came out to help out their fellow friends. Thank you all for your support.

Artist/Curator

"SET IN MOTION" DECEMBER 2008

I am an artist also a curator. The first show I curated was a tremendous success. I curated a group show with over 40 artists. The show was titled "Set-In-Motion" December 6th & 7th, 2008. It took place at Basswerks Gallery in Los Angeles, USA.  www.basswerks.net

This was a 2-day show. I combined a variety of media like photography, drawing, painting, printmaking, installation, architecture, sculpture, and Music. (and many more)
I had 3 bands (Random Ninjas  , Night of broken Glass   & Emberis Theory  ) play live and 1 hip-hop artist (Kid Casino-The Lyrical Apache) and 2 DJs (Zuko Kid & Chee-Bo  ).

The theme or title "Set-in-Motion" was chosen to serve as a "fire-started" a "kick-start" a spark of enthusiasm and desire to get artists motivated in an art-world full of clutter and competition. I had both: established artist and new artists. My intention was to create an event/art-show that would serve the artists and expose new talent. The quality of the art we had was exceptional as I was told by many.

A major piece of the art-show was a 30ft installation/sculpture that was at the center of the gallery that served and became a space enhancement. The title of this sculpture was "The Clouds" (By Jesus Eduardo and Paulina Boyer-Magana). The very thoughtful and elaborate installation was arched over the above space between the ceiling and the viewing audience. This sculpture/Installation, (that took over 4 moths to plan, design and execute to perfection), was removed and destroyed after the 2nd and last day of the show.

You can see videos) of the gallery in my myspace profile www.myspace.com/Efren_Luna). In one of the two videos you can hear live music by Random Ninjas

"URBAN GRAVITATION" JULY 2009

Art & Music Show on Sunday July 12th, 2009. Our show consisted of 3 events in 3 separate spaces within one venue (THE GREEN TURTLE Whittier, CA). A gallery space, a patio with live graffiti artists, and the main bar with live bands and rappers on stage. Our theme “URBAN GRAVITATION” was inspired to bring in artworks and music that expressed some aspects of urban life. Because in our big metropolis as diverse as everything is, we also intermingle at some point, this was the focus of our show.

An extra room inside the venue was transformed into an alternative space gallery with an installation based on architectural designs that served as a wall to hang artworks. (This was an amazing installation). The alternative gallery space has been described as one big installation.

The patio was transformed with special “canvases” for graffiti artists to work live. They turned the otherwise boring patio into a live happening for these urban artists and gave the show a touch of authenticity.

And the main stage, next to the bar and DJ spinning between 4 bands and 6 rappers. (BANDS) KATERPILLAR, BOMBEROS, SHYTOWN, and MIXBREED.  (RAPPERS) G WEBB , CASINOKINGZ,  BIG STORM,  ADIVINA?, REBEL KID, STEVIE CROOKS And DJ HAVOK

"THE LIVE FESTIVAL" SEP 2009

Art & Music Show on Saturday September 19th, 2009. Our theme “THE LIVE FESTIVAL” was selected to encompass these 3 live simultaneous events and to help stir live art and music movement.

Our main exhibition space was the patio.

Performances by: (BANDS& DJ’S )KATERPILLAR, Geoffro, DJ Lumis , World Famous DJ HAZZE, PMA King Selector, DJ Alex Love and DJ Brian Martin

The stage and bar area included 3 small visual designs that connected visually with the alternative gallery in the back.  Also the wall had 1 LCD screen showing a 3D animation video design of the Installation.
