I don’t know if anyone else has seen the YouTube animation that explains the ten dimensions of the physical world, as predicted by the theoretical framework of M- or String theory. It’s quite confusing. However, one of the ideas it introduces is that at certain points the shift from one dimension to the next is achieved by folding that dimension through into the next (in similar fashion to how one would fold a piece of paper into a Mobius strip). This is the process that allows a bei... [more]

Essay by Dan Cameron The parallel worlds of printmaking on the one hand, and painting and sculpture on the other, have had a long history of close but unequal interaction. Countless wielders of the paintbrush and chisel have, over the centuries, turned to printmaking primarily as a way of expanding the circulation of their work, so that the arduous and time-consuming creation of unique images can be offset by means of an inherently reproducible medium. But the art world has not always ex... [more]

When I interviewed for my job as assistant at Jack Hanley Gallery in San Francisco in 2003, the city was in the process of tearing down across the street the Valencia Gardens housing development. Because of the large area of vacant space opened up by the demolition of the 1942 multilevel housing blocks, a wind tunnel had formed, blowing more dust and debris under the gallery’s door than usual. Having moved to San Francisco the year before from Los Angeles, my first introduction to... [more]

A Mind Meld is a Terrible Thing to Waste is not inspired by the United Negro College Fund's famous advertising slogan "A Mind is a Terrible Thing to Waste," (1972) which has entered the United States' lexicon, but a riff off a quote from an interview with the Grateful Dead last month in which drummer Mickey Hart and Bob Weir referred to their collaboration and 2009 tour. Less of a collaboration than a summer show in February, Jack Hanley's exhibition pulls together about a third of the gallery... [more]

I must admit that I did not make it to the "Passengers" exhibit that ran at CCA's Wattis Institute for Contemporary Art from September of last year through this August. However, from its press description, it seems that the new incarnation of the show, "The Exhibition Formerly Known as Passengers," implements the same format and its is premise not much different from its predecessor. The show includes the work of 12 artists, 11 of which are exhibited in a group show, which spans the perime...
