“I'm so excited to be talking to you” is a group exhibition curated by Lauren McCaffrey and Allyson Spellacy that features text based work by 27 artists. The exhibition is at Denizen Design gallery, a rather sleek space for a show tightly knit with work ranging from unknown artists to the likes of Bruce Nauman and Tom Sachs. Christy McCaffrey’s cutout collages of cartoon-like people are made from newspapers, magazines, books and maps and are seamless yet with a quirky cut and paste eleme... [more]

Stan VanDerBeek at The Box March 14th, 2009 - April 18th, 2009

Stan Vanderbeeks' first solo exhibition in Los Angeles is nothing short of spectacular. On view at the Box are a selection of Vanderbeek’s collages and prints that were used in his films as moving images. The collages are breathtaking: they are stylish, smart and beautifully rendered pen on photographs, clippings of Greek and Roman sculptures and tear-outs of fashion magazines. Upstairs in the gallery, the collages are accompanied by a re-creation Vanderbeek’s “Panels for the Walls of the... [more]

The current exhibition of catalogues entitled Fama and Fortune Bulletin at 2nd Cannons is sexy. Partially because of the design: brown, recycled paper, soft covers with uniformed layout and matte pages. Somewhat because of their presentation: aligned on four white shelves with warm spotlights.  But mostly because of their content: every issue one or two artists are invited to design, write and format the contents of the publication. Albert Oehlen, Franz West, Martin Kippenberger, Frances Stark an... [more]

Sack of Bones at Peres Projects (Chinatown) presents work that resists, defies and denies the norm, traditional aesthetic beauty and focuses on “a sack of bones” which is deemed as useless, deformed and dead. The pieces have an irony and dark quality to them, but all connect through their “sack of bones” theme, hoping that while all of it seems irrelevant, when connected and put together, they set a unified tone. The mood is set even before entering the gallery with a piece by Andrew... [more]

Anthony Goicolea’s Related III exhibition at Sandroni Rey continues a series of tracing the history and timelines of a family separated by immigration. Goicolea is a first generation immigrant from Cuba and this exploration of generations and events is captured through photographs, drawings and an installation. Friedrich Kunath at Blum & Poe October 24th, 2008 - December 6th, 2008
Posted 11/10/08

Friedrich Kunath’s current exhibition at Blum&Poe centers on the theme of home and moving from one place to another. However, in this case, the move is filled with melancholy and longing. The exhibition creates a feeling of uneasiness and sadness, but the cheery style and imagery save it from being depressing. Upon entering the first room, large, bright-colored canvases with various scenes silk-screened on them (a monkey, a couple embracing, quotes from a Bartlett’s) express a romantic feeli... [more]
