It's as if the artwork decamped from the gallery and took refuge amongst the luxury wares in the nearby designer outlet. I probably would not have noticed Andy Coolquitt’s installation in Maryam Nassir Zadeh’s hip boutique if I hadn’t been looking for it. The work’s prolix title, no I didn't go to any museums here I hate museums museums are just stores that charge you to come in there are lots of free museums here but they have names like real stores, suggests this Texas based... Western Bridge is closing in August of 2012, ending an eight-year run that felt like a lifetime of art experiences created exclusively for the Northwest. While the current exhibit, Repossessed, engages questions of its legacy and collection directly, I want to focus on a single piece as the jumping off point for a commentary on the nature and importance of this space. The first thing that must be understood is that the gallery was conceived as a temporary project space that happened to house the co... [more]

Ah, the summer group show. The irreverent member of the gallery calendar, it can run the gamut from an inspiring outlook on emerging talent to an over-intellectualized love child of gallerists and part-time curators alike. Often, it’s a little of both. Yet, somehow I still look forward to these unwieldy offerings each year, figuring, at the very least, I’ll come out with some status quo of the young and unsigned and the older and under-shown. Usually it works out. So, when I was sifting through... [more]

The latest offering from Seattle's Western Bridge gallery, Funhouse, seems intent on leaving a lasting impression: vertigo, a lack of breath, seared retinas. Granted that the carnival image conjured by the title is more Britney or X-tina than Turrell or Nauman, but the carefully pruned selections both support and belie this whimsical touch. This is not to say the sideshow allusion is dumped. Rather, one gets the impression that each of the major “attractions,” Mungo Thompson's Skyspace Bouncehouse, 2007,... [more]

Karen Rosenberg concluded her recent New York Times review of Andy Coolquitt’s show We Care About You by branding one piece “Minimalism’s warm and fuzzy side.”  When you acknowledge that many of the linear, illuminated sculptures in this show could also be used as seating and light fixtures, the whole project could sound like an ad for furniture. Considering Cooquitt’s contemporary color scheme, and the references made to human scale, this exhibition even sounds as if it could be as co... [more]
