Among the irrevocable losses Hurricane Sandy wrought from New York were works of art: thousands of objects damaged or destroyed in Chelsea galleries, studios in Red Hook and Greenpoint. Phong Bui, artist, curator, and publisher of the Brooklyn Rail, was among those who lost work to the storm. He curated Come Together: Surviving Sandy, Year 1 as a statement of solidarity with a traumatized art community. Sprawled over 100,000 square feet on four floors in the massive Industry City building in Sunset P... [more]

New technology can be genuinely disruptive. The same week the group show “Xstraction” opened at The Hole Gallery, a company called Defense Distributed published digital blueprints for a potentially lethal, plastic pistol that could be fabricated at home using a 3D printer. The plans were quickly forced off their website by the US State Department. A 3D printer renders raw materials such as plastic, paper, metal, or other substances into objects, making it possible to manufacture nearly any smal... [more]

For being an exhibition themed around motivation and perseverance, I left feeling down from “Hang In There,” a show currently on view at Bridgeport’s Co-Prosperity Sphere and curated by photographer and conceptual artist Jason Lazarus. While I trust that Lazarus’ own motivations were in the right place, the show itself hung as an explosion of labor and positivity toward no discernible end. Here were forty-five artists exhibiting works of all sorts, each expressing or reflecting their own commit... [more]

De-Nature at Jolie Laide, by Daniel Gerwin

The artists included in De-Nature, curated by the painter Wendy White, are concerned with dismantling what might be considered “natural” in painting, i.e. a coherently painted canvas stretched over a rectangular wooden frame and displayed on a wall.  Disassembling and reconfiguring the elements of painting is a project that has been ongoing for at least a century, but White offers insight into how a new generation of artists is attacking the problem.  In the absence of consensus painting norms to... Wendy White at Andrew Rafacz Gallery September 10th, 2010 - October 23rd, 2010
Posted 9/20/10

Opening nights are good for first impressions—of galleries, of art and of course, people—but I wouldn’t finalize an opinion of a show immediately after the opening.  Wendy White’s solo exhibition with Andrew Rafacz Gallery, entitled “FRENCH CUTS,” is an example of why this is true, and why going back to see the same work at a different time, in a different atmosphere, is crucial to forming a complete impression. Friday, September 10th, was the big opening night for all of Chicago’s galleries as the fall art s... [more]

With No Vacancy, the current exhibition at The Butcher’s Daughter Gallery in Ferndale MI, there is no fear of disconnecting from the ever-surrounding buzz of the mega-stimulating noise of the current cultural environment.  The exhibit unveils clips of contemporary realities shown in works widely varied in material and process, and in some cases flavored with ironic social commentary. Many of the pieces reflect the complex visual landscape of urban life.  Michael Anderson takes the viewer on a pop... [more]
