I checked the new group show at Fred [London], Collage, London/New York, as it was being installed. There were some wonderful things spread about the gallery waiting to be hung. The opportunity to stage a major exhibition of collages arose from contact with Pavel Zubok Gallery, New York; a specialist collector with pieces ranging from Marcel Duchamp to Joseph Cornell (magician of mysterious and intricate cabinets). The survey includes over seventy artists drawn across generations from the... [more]

Typically, if one sees work that she/he likes, they are not likely to get a second chance to see such work again for quite some time, since the unspoken rule of our beloved galleries is to avoid anything that is not making its debut. I suspect, for this reason, the non-profit space White Columns inaugurated their Looking Back annual, three years ago. Each installment is selected by a NYC-based curator who gets to round together their favorite works seen about town in institutions, gallery setti... [more]

Just down the street from its original location at 14th and Guerrero, the Kiki Gallery--by all accounts a tiny, interdisciplinary space--has been resurrected by artist Colter Jacobsen and writer Kevin Killian at Ratio 3. Comprised almost entirely of works shown at Kiki, during its short yet fervent 18 month run, the exhibit chronicles Kiki owner, Rick Jacobsen’s vision and devotion to the arts in San Francisco. Opened in 1993, Kiki played host to a number of interestingly themed shows (t... [more]

These issues are explored by a wide range of internationally recognized artists who have created work that i... [more]
