Statement
Leila Singleton began as a painter in high school, earned a BFA in graphic design from the Savannah College of Art & Design, and became enamored of photography along the way. She synthesizes that journey in her collection of abstract digital photographs, known as "Dislocations."
Singleton began creating her Dislocations after an acquaintance bemoaned the lack of "wonder" in daily life. Determined that it is the responsibility (if not definition) of an artist to find transcendent visions even in the smallest and dullest of locales, she began capturing mundane -- and even bizarre -- subject matter, with an emphasis on inventive cropping and angles. Singleton photographs everything from sidewalks to curtains and even food. Using her painterly sensibilities and the digital retouching skills she employs as a graphic designer, Singleton severs all remaining ties between the raw shot and its subject's original form and geography, primarily via hue shifts. There is an element of escapism to Singleton's work, and she is fascinated by the contradiction of using a photograph -- traditionally a documentary art form -- to obfuscate reality.
