Statement

My work explores the relationship between formality and random play, structure and spontaneity, control and fluidity. I regard these as fundamental formal issues in contemporary abstract painting, and they provide a framework for personal expression. I have developed a process that employs diverse methods of mark-making and juxtaposes different combinations of color. Paint is poured, spread, and brushed on, with both glossy and matt surfaces, fluid and solid media. My aim is to create a space in which contrasting visual elements are interwoven into a fluid composition.

I see my current paintings as  “intuitive landscapes” of organic shapes poured over subtly shaded backgrounds.  Many suggest fictional natural phenomena. In some of my work (such as the “Into Dawn” series), each painting begins with a background built up out of a solid color, sectioned by sharp-edged bands of thick paint, which suggest the remnants of a grid. While this phase is planned and controlled, the second phase is spontaneous and involves risk. Layers of liquid paint are poured onto the canvas, allowing shapes to form and colors to interpenetrate. In my more recent work (such as "Earth and Sky"), the elements of color and composition are reduced, and there are no more ornamental details such as outlining or geometric stripes. These choices attempt to get to what is essential, using a simplified language with a universal appeal.

In all of the work process inescapably remains important — pouring and holding back, guiding without controlling. Over time, my process has become more improvisational, and since there is no going back once the paint is poured, it requires a certain fearlessness. I hope that the work conveys the excitement and pleasure in the application of the materials and that it engages the viewer in a meaningful pictorial experience.
