In Jon Rafman’s 2013 film, Still Life (Betamale), we watch furries and hentai sourced from the deep web while a flat voiceover delivers a speech about leaving one world to enter another. It’s the promise virtual realities offer us: escapism. This idea is at the center of Grand Tour, the inaugural two-person show featuring new works from Rafman and Keren Cytter at Feuer/Mesler, one of two new Lower East Side galleries founded this year by Zach Feuer and Untitled director Joel Mesler (the... Frieze Art Fair is very much not free. A day ticket will cost you £33 this year. If you want to pop in after work, a 5–7 PM entry is £15. Heaven forbid you want to bring a child. Doing so will set you back £21, even if they sleep through it. Jake Chapman recently caused controversy by stating in public that children shouldn’t be taken to see contemporary art because they don't get it. In the case of Frieze, I’d have to agree with him—it's unlikely to be worth spe... [more]

Launched in April of this year in the old Dia:Chelsea building, X is a terminal, year-long, non-profit initiative. It is the collaborative effort of a long list of global heavyweights in the art world, ranging from commercial gallerists like Elizabeth Dee (X’s founder) and Paula Cooper, to artists like Cindy Sherman and Ryan Trecartin, and multi-taskers like Matthew Higgs. In an economy where ‘pop ups’ seem to be the most marketable approach to any venture, X Initiative seems to be cap... [more]

Curator Daniel Birnbaum chose a clever theme in this year’s curated biennale exhibition. It has almost endless scope and he did a fairly good job of making sure that the artists fit the topic – even if that did sometimes mean equating “making installations” with “making worlds”. The art was generally of high quality, interactive, thought provoking and yes, even fun.The first and most entrancing work was Lydia Pape’s “Ttéia I, C. 2002” – a black void shot through with glinting gol... The exhibition Notorious at FRAC - le Plateau presents the acquisitions the institution has made over the last two years, but you wouldn't know it just by looking around.  It has the feel of an immaculately curated group show, harmoniously grouped together under the title.  A couple works stand out as not quite fitting the theme, but for the most part I was swept into the gallery by the allure of mystery and concealed identity, espionage and subterfuge, as promised by the Hitchcockian title.  Ker...
