As a painter of abstraction and mostly pure form, my artistic concerns are mostly felt, tested and discovered directly on the canvas and in my gut.  A series of brushed marks and rag erasures lead to further considerations, patterns and compositional changes emerge and then are applied or diversified.

As the textures and densities flow, form and change over days and weeks, the challenge  becomes to slow down a bit and listen and see more deeply.

Sometimes making a painting seems very full of consternation. Ideas may go against each other, leading the maker to have to double back and reassess.        Formulating, viewing, doubting, building, fragmenting, moving, processing.....arranging, modifying.

JEFF PAUL RILEY received his BA in Fine Arts in 1995 from UCSB.  Jeff has been working on various bodies of paintings since he graduated.

His paintings use botanical (natural) and  computer graphics / design elements (cyber) references as a starting point for his abstract oil paintings.

He is influenced by nature and other process oriented artists who use systems of ordering and arranging ideas and thoughts, such  as  Joan Snyder, Judy Pfaff, and Albert Oehlen and Bill Jensen.  Jeff likes art that seems to be part puzzle and sort of an answer at the same time.  He likes to play w/ scale and shifting systems of painting processes.
