Georg Baselitz at Musée d'Art moderne de la Ville de Paris / ARC September 30th, 2011 - January 29th, 2012

Nothing I have to say about Georg Baselitz’s sculptures will do justice to their magnificence. And from the start, it must be clear that much of their magnificence has to do with the way they are exhibited at the Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris. Each monumental sculpture is given its own space, a space it devours with the intensity of its emotion, a space into which we are invited to become embroiled in this intensity. Though it is difficult to privilege any of the sculptures above others,... [more]

Georg Baselitz at White Cube, Mason's Yard May 20th, 2011 - July 9th, 2011

Georg Baselitz’s first exhibition at White Cube in 2009 featured a series of expressionistic paintings of Lenin and Stalin, summoning up the political history of his native East Germany in the Soviet era. In his second show at the gallery, Between Eagles and Pioneers, history again filters into his paintings albeit through more ambiguous motifs – anonymous double portraits, dogs, and eagles. Painted characteristically upside down, the works present a mundus inversus in which our eye gravitates... [more]

Something unusual is happening to visitors’ attentions in the Van Abbemuseum’s fourth and final installment of Play Van Abbe, an 18-month exhibition program considering artists and exhibition makers as diverse “players” within the museum. The current exhibition adds further players to the roster, putting the museum-going behaviors of viewers up for scrutiny. There’s no shortage of art that relies on or even exploits the viewer, but here it’s the exhibition using its visitors. The artwork on the w... [more]

Not the catchiest title perhaps, but Kupferstichkabinett is certainly a memorable show.  Referring to the collections of the German aristocracy which in turn lead to the more accessible print and drawing rooms in museums, this show draws on the past to prove that drawing is very much alive and kicking in contemporary art. Set up like a museum, with works densely hung on dark green walls, the show turns the White Cube into a museum of modern drawing, exploring its pivotal role in the pra... [more]
