I come from a long line of artists, artisans, musicians and crazy people and began painting as a toddler–-my father set me up with a mini-easel and my own oil paint box to keep me occupied while he worked in his studio. Art was always there but was never something I was encouraged to make a living at, I was expected to go to college and have a career. This was the 1970’s and as a woman, I was obliged to make my mark in a man’s world. Art, like gardening, was what one did to keep sane after work, or to sell on “Shakedown Street” to support my Grateful Dead habit while I was in high school and college.

So I worked in the criminal justice system for about 25 years as a probation/parole officer, addictions specialist, therapist, etc. Art was always there and on a limited basis, I sold some of my work—posters in an independent record store, greeting cards and small drawings in a new age gift shop; bartered for services such as auto maintenance, therapeutic massage, yoga class; and donated many pieces for fundraisers. My family relocated from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to Grass Valley, California, in 2009. In 2011, I decided to engage in art fulltime. To this end, I am currently studying studio art and art history at Sierra College. I will eventually earn my master’s degree in the arts.

My work is mostly abstract, often non-objective, and almost always subject to varied interpretation—I am enamored with colors, shapes and textures. I rarely work from sketches and almost never from photos (except for commissioned work and murals)—inspiration comes from every where I’ve been and every where I’d like to go. Injustice and man’s inhumanity to man, manmade and natural disasters, political absurdities, music, and other weird stuff summoned by my imagination are some of my subjects. I draw constantly. I am first a painter, acrylic is my medium of choice. Over the past couple of years, I have also been doing 3D work in ceramics, plaster, and/or recycled materials.
