Why I do what I do
I have been immersed in the culture of driving by growing up in the suburbs of Los Angeles. My world continues to be shaped by the web of freeways that I travel daily. That which changes and that which remains the same form the basis for “Next Exit,” a body of drawings that catalogs my past and present through freeway driving.
Although negotiating traffic can be an all-consuming experience, I find myself distracted by situations or objects that are visible just beyond the roadway. The stories behind suburban sprawl and urban transformation fascinate me. I also see the connections to my childhood in the enduring elements of the cityscape. Employing graphite pencil on gessoed wood panels, I create representational images floating in a sea of white. This allows the subject to be viewed without surrounding influences. When driving, I discover the imagery for these drawings. I then return to the site with a camera for documentation. Sometimes scenes are restaged when the pivotal moment has passed. The simplicity of the graphite pencil reduces the image to a place of both emotion and objective observation.
Each “next exit” can deliver both the banal and the surprisingly extraordinary. A little of each extreme and many points in between find their way into my work, motivated by the love/hate relationship inherent in driving. Intermingled are the layers of histories of other people in that setting. And I am content to let those ghosts emerge without yielding the entirety of their stories.
