Tilo Baumgärtel studied at Hochschule für Grafik und Buchkunst in Leipzig (1991-98). In 1998-2000 he was a "Meisterschüler" under Professor Arno Rink. In 2000 he organized and founded together with five other recent Academy graduates Liga Gallery in Berlin (two year project) which led to his work getting international recognition. He has exhibited internationally and his work is contained in many major public and private collections. In 2005 his work was included in two major survey exhibitions, Life After Death: New Leipzig Paintings from the Rubell Family Collection at Mass MOCA and From Leipzig: Works from the Ovitz Family Collection at the Cleveland Museum of Art. He lives and works in Leipzig, Germany.
