Statement
statement

I come from a background of making interactive psychedelic pop performances under the name “Anna Oxygen.”  The performances often deal with scientific, cultural, or biological things I take for granted.  Recently this practice has expanded to include interactive installations, and audio recordings that invite subjects to actively participate in the experience and sometimes, creation and re creations of the works.

I am interested in various intersections of space.  IE: the intersection between organism and fiction/technological self, the intersection of individual consciousness and cultural consciousness, and the intersection of an “art work” and the subject interpreting the art.

The intersection between our organic and cultural selves is of particular interest to me as it is the alive and messy space that binds us to our shared, often institutionalized cultural web of symbols and metaphors.  We share our meta fictions with others as “culture.” We also share the burden/superpower of being potential signifiers in this fiction.

I continue to explore this ambiguous space between our physical bodies and a cultural body, as well as the ambiguous space where our consciousness intersects with others in our personal relationships.  How do we map out or quantify the spaces between us?  What happens when certain and often culturally loaded words get re-contextualized?  How might this affect the ways in which we physically respond to the words and to each other?

ANNA (OXYGEN) Huff

Best known for her aerobic live performances, Anna Huff is a multi-media artist and musician.  She has toured both Europe and the United States under the name Anna Oxygen, performing dance pop recitals and fantasy-science performance pieces.  Backdrops of video animation, made by Huff are frequently employed in her live shows, illustrating such concepts as the girl named Pretty Psychedelic who hallucinates colors, and the adventure of a Calorie searching for the end of the rainbow.   More recently she has moved into mixed media audio and visual installations that invite participants to interact with various sounds and spaces.

Huff has composed and released several albums of electronic  music under the name Anna Oxygen, most recently  "This is an Exercise"  released  on Kill Rock Stars.  She has also been invited by a number of arts institutions to lead workshops in music and video production and has been heavily involved in the Northwest and Los Angeles arts and music communities. She has  performed and shown work at  The Seattle Art Museum, Telic Arts Exchange, Machine Project, The Armory Center for the Arts and The Portland Institute for Contemporary Art.  She is currently getting her MFA in integrated media at CALARTS in Los Angeles, and is a teaching fellow at the Armory Center for the Arts in Pasadena.
