About Jo Hay

Artist Statement
My work is figurative, always in series, and deals with sexuality and identity. Fascinated by the mysterious middle ground between the two sexes, I want to probe our psychological and sexual perception of others.

Currently I’m seeking to paint human heads that appear male and female simultaneously. This series of paintings are not portraits of specific people. They are pieced together from photographs, paintings and life. I strive to make dynamic compositions with individual, overlapping brushstrokes that weave together to create strong anatomical form. That said, the patchwork nature of these composites allows me to push some areas of the painting to become more abstract with the idea of making the structure appear to dissolve and resolve with the question of gender.

Biography
Jo Hay is a British painter born in Newcastle Upon Tyne, England in 1964. She earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Graphic Design from Middlesex University, London in 1986 and her MFA in Painting from the New York Academy of Art in 2012, with a concentration in anatomy.

Hay has painted since she was a child. Her fascination with the limitless possibilities of color was the catalyst to pursue a career in art. With a solid professional background in magazine design, in 1990 Hay moved from London to New York City. Shortly thereafter she began attending classes at the Art Students League of New York. In 2000 Hay left magazine design to dedicate herself to painting full time. While living and painting in the West Village she became more aware of the obvious presence of androgyny represented by the transsexuals, transvestites, and transgendered men and women who congregated there. Fascinated by the mysterious middle ground between the two sexes, Hay began to probe the psychological and sexual perception of gender through her work.

Hay’s work has been included in various group and juried shows including the Cambridge Art Association “North East Juried Show” 2010 – juror Cheryl Brutvan Curator of Contemporary Art at the Norton Museum of Art in Palm Beach, Florida. In 2010 Hay was awarded the prestigious Lillian Orlowsy and William Freed Foundation Grant from the Provincetown Art Association and Museum. In 2011 Hay received the New York Academy of Art Portrait Scholarship from patrons Stephanie and Tim Ingrassia.

Hay’s most recent solo exhibition entitled “Betwixt” was a series of large scaled heads that appeared to be male and female simultaneously.

In November 2013 one of Hay's recent works from the “Betwixt” series was selected as a finalist in Madonna’s #ARTFORFREEDOM competition; a global initiative encouraging creative expression that brings awareness to human rights violations.

Hay’s piece “ Lipstickin’, queerlovin’, crossdressin’, genderbendin’, dragkingin’, dragqueenin’, faggot’, flaming’ dykes for Freedom” was personally selected by Madonna during a special #ArtForFreedom live curation on Tumblr.

Hay is currently working on a new series of large scaled heads, continuing her exploration of human sexuality and identity.
