Jody Gilby has a BA (Hons) in Fine Art from Central Saint Martins College of Art and is a member of the professional artist collective – XAP (Cross Arts Projects). XAP have worked together to produce numerous group shows in the last few years and their most recent show and month long residency - 'The Psychotropic House' at Yinka Shonibare’s Guest Projects in Hackney in January 2014 was a great success. Jody's individual practice seeks to explore the widening gap between traditional medias and new technologies in art. Her work at once embraces and challenges the positives and negatives that surround social media applications such as Instagram and Vine. Exploring the tensions that exist between new ‘instant’ technologies and craftsmanship within art, and consequently, their value and place as art objects in today’s highly competitive art market. Merging conventional techniques such as collage and video with newer social media apps available on the iPhone. The work is subjected to a number of creative processes in which the final outcome is inherently invested with the Labour of Production. Alongside this, Jody’s practice almost always alludes to the 'Illusion of the Real', finding tentative connections through research that gently negotiate the boundaries between fact, fiction and authenticity, using trusted and untrusted formats. Her work has recently featured in Vogue magazine and been twice a Mixed Media showcase winner. She lives and works in Tonbridge, Kent, UK.
