There is a certainty I experience uniquely in the movement of pencil on paper. For me, drawing is stillness and confidence; it's just the pencil, the paper, and me. And we are in it together. Birds are such visually intricate and varied creatures that they continue to provide me with a rich source of subject matter. Posing and clothing the birds adds a quiet absurdity to the portraits that just makes me smile. No matter if their gaze appears to be stern, thoughtful, quizzical, or amused, I grow fond of my birds' little faces as I render them out on the page; imagining their stories and laughing that I've managed to trap them in a moment of time on the page for all to see.
I will be taking part in the Artist Trust EDGE Professional Development Program this summer.
