Julio came from Mexico City to California in 1993, but it was not until he moved to Ojai and began working for an 87 year old artist named Gino Hollander, that his love of painting was born.
Gino saw his interest and encouraged his efforts by providing paints, canvas and support. Only six months later Julio was awarded the Ojai Studio Artist's scholarship for outstanding achievement.
Julio brings a rich Aztec heritage, love of nature and humble spirit to his work. His style is unique, free and full of passion.
"I knew nothing of art growing up. I have always been creative but did not know that art was a possibility when choosing a career. I did not have the chance to feel what I wanted to do.
Being a painter has brought me to myself for the first time. I am finding my soul in this work. I am lost in it, hungry to know more and more."
(If you see Julio on the street and want to say hello, his last name is pronounced Chee-ko-tank-ah.)
