STATEMENT

Entitled Year in Color, this series seeks to visually and literally render the abstract concept of time and its measurement. Since 2011, in a return to an earlier practice of daily creations, I have been creating a small painting for each day using a complex color that has been made by mixing a simple set of primary pigments and white. The color for each day begins with the previous day's color and develops from responses to the day’s events. The practice is an attempt to translate and capture the day’s unique experiences, activities, and moods. I have assembled these small works into week, month, and full-year installations. With varying annual rules and limitations for each year’s iterations, I am exploring the interplay between structure, intent, and chance to create a record of time that is both a narrative and a history.

Well into the fourth year of this project, I have found through the gradual accumulation of impressions that this body of work represents, shifting between personal experience / cultural influence / universal structures: time adds up to more than what we make of it in the moment.
