My work explores the interplay between structure, intent, and chance. For me, intention initiates action, which sets in motion both limits and possibilities. In the work a sense of time and rhythm develop from the exploration of color and the process of painting, building layer by layer, a back and forth dance of paint creating rhythmic narratives of time and space.
The Year in Color (52 weeks and a Day), developed from a desire to give an abstraction (time) a literal and visual shape. To create a visual record of time, Ladewig decided to paint on one 6 x 6 inch canvas panel to represent each day. The colors were derived from a palette of primary colors: red, blue, yellow, and white. The color for each day begins with the previous day's color, and develops from responses to events that happened on that day, coupled with a pure curiosity about and love of color. (Travel days are an exception to this color structure: they are all the same color of gray; as they represent interruptions and transitional days in the year.)
