statement
My current work is a series of mixed media drawing/paintings using ink and acrylic on canvas. The works are abstracted landscapes and mindscapes inspired by the ambient sounds of Brian Eno and are constructed using a grid which is similar to that of a freeway system. The drawing process then develops in and around this system. The surface may also be approached with one vertical or horizontal line drawn across the entire canvas. I then follow this element over and over again across the picture plane. Slight variations in the movement of my hand add to the appearance of mountains and cliffs as each additional line is recorded. The repetitive process refers to the interactive relationship between mountain ranges and urban sprawl as well as the influence of early eighties computer drawings.
The photographs reveal a panoramic image of the rugged mountains of Connemara, Ireland and the developing hills of Hollywood. I use photography while hiking to record the juxtaposition of a metropolis or seaside village in relationship to contours of nature. I am fascinated by natural organic structures that are revealed in drifting clouds and rolling fog as well as the geometric formations of plate tectonics and urban expansion
