The Rockaway Artists Alliance and the National Parks Service hosted the hordes of art lovers who came to witness the opening of the site specific art installations (on view through September 1st), a free open-air performance by rock legend Patti Smith, and a Walt Whitman poetry reading by hipster heartthrob... The Cat Show was inevitable: an art exhibition devoted to the feline as internet meme, domestic partner, and kitsch icon. Contemporary cat tropes were as bound to spill into art spaces as the boom of advertising was irresistible fodder for the “pictures generation” forty years ago. The temptation is to dismiss The Cat Show, now on view at White Columns, as pandering: like a motorcycle exhibition or Harry Potter at the Discovery Center. The Walker Art Center presented a wildly popular Int... [more]

I’ve been ruminating about the “attempt.” I’ve been rolling the word and a few of its meanings over in my mind these last days. (Some joke could be inserted here about “attempts to understand attempt,” I’ll let you come up with your own.) In all this cogitation, the word thankfully did not dissolve into meaninglessness (as some words do when you repeat them too many times—spoon… spoon… spoon… spoon… spoon?), instead it gained a new kind of significance for me. The impetus for this rumination on the word began du... [more]

The group show, “All of This is Melting Away,” at Royal-T art space presents the work of 33 diverse artists in an imaginative, enlivening, and vibrant array of painting, mixed media, sculpture, pottery, and light and sound installation. Each of the 43 works somehow indicate a quality of fluctuation and variability, as implied by the show’s title, and suggest the motif of melting by combining mediums, blurring subjects, and experimenting with space. The show as a whole destabilizes categorizat... [more]
