John Goodman

John Goodman creates landscapes, interiors and intimate portraits in a gestural style that oscillates between abstraction and representation. He often works with a single motif that is transformed in a succeon of intensely worked canvases. Each painting resonates in the series as it elaborates and complicates the simple notion of figure or landscape. Goodman’s technique is distinguished by lush sculptural surfaces that explore the expressive plasticity of the paint.
 
“ Writing about painting and art in general tends to pin something down that is by nature fluid, provisional and always changing,” according to Goodman, “Writing about it risks not only misunderstanding but denying the very nature of the work itself. That said, for me painting is a coming together of two things – a specific subject (a model or landscape) and another elemental aspect. I would describe this elemental aspect as that thing which allows us to connect, empathize, love or feel compassion for all that is other than us.”
 
Goodman is a native Californian who lives and works in San Francisco. A self-taught painter, his work has been deeply influenced by the Bay Area Figurative Movement which grew out of the work of David Park, Richard Diebenkorn , Nathan Oliviera and others. His work has been shown at the Tritan Museum in San Jose as well as the Allan Stone Gallery in New York.
